GERARD SCHWARZ & SEATTLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: MOZART - PIANO CONCERTOS

180g Vinyl, LP - RM-2506

Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra form one of the most successful and celebrated musical pairings in the world of classical music. Honoured with two Grammy Awards and eight Grammy nominations, they are one of the most recorded orchestras in the USA. For Mozart's Piano Concertos 21 and 24, they have teamed up with internationally renowned pianist Eugene George Istomin, who has a lifelong passion for Mozart's work.

The 21st Piano Concerto in C major, with its cheerful tone and large orchestration, was one of the pianist's favourite works, and he played it at President Ronald Reagan's inaugural concert in 1981. For the 24th Piano Concerto, described by Mozart experts as "an explosion of dark, tragic emotion", the composer also chose one of the largest orchestrations in his oeuvre. Istomin and Schwarz, friends and colleagues for more than 20 years, recorded the two concertos at the St. Thomas Center in Washington on 10 October 1995, preserving the continuity and dynamics of a live concert with only a few interruptions.

Sound engineer "Prof. Keith Johnson was responsible for the recording, while Paul Stubblebine did the half-speed mastering for the 200g double vinyl LP. Stereophile's 'Recording of the Month' for May 1996, this has already been released on CD and HRx.

180g or 200g pressing - not a simple question

For identical titles from Reference Recordings, there are covers labelled 180g which contain LPs weighing around 200g, and vice versa. This is due to the fact that the pressing plants QRT and RTI in the USA have a 10 per cent tolerance for weight and occasionally mix up orders. There is no difference in sound between the presses. Please don't call Sieveking Sound to have an LP unpacked and put on the scales just for you!
